  • From the beginning, we didn’t
    look a lot alike:
    her hair straight and black
    mine bouncy and brown.
Yet today when the light hits it right,
we both have temple streaks of gray.

She grew up on the longest street in Lyman,
with summer visits to the shores of Clark Hill,
while I learned to ride a bike on Little Street
and found my balance on water skis
behind the boat at Lake Harwell.
Still, we both long to hear the waves at Myrtle.

When it comes to music, she was raised on
the Beach Boys, Beattles, and Alabama,
but I came of age with Bon Jovi and M.J.
In the summer, I’ll pick a morning run over her afternoon nap.
I love curling up with Barb Kingsolver and Sandra Cisneros
while she prefers Nick Sparks and Dorthea Benton Frank.

Each day I give my time teaching kids to write
just like she gave hers teaching me to sew.
The way her voice shines through the phone
you might mistake it for mine.
Our hearts hold the same guiding wisdom
only found through heartache and forgiveness.

So we share the same generous Southern Soul,
    my mother and I.
She is love…and I am love…both mothers too young,
    crafting memories, make-believe and miracles,
    holding our families together
with salmon stew, faith and Elmer’s glue.
