  • I live in a little suburb of Chicago and in that suburb lives a woman who I greatly admire. Her name is Emily and she is my friend.

Emily is in her 70’s and loves to garden. Over the years she has pulled out most of her back yard and replaced it with pond. There are two large koi ponds with a special bog area between the ponds to grow interesting water plants. She cares a great deal about our environment and treating it right.

At any given moment in the summer you can stand next to Emily’s ponds and see dragonflies and hear frogs. We go over occasionally to feed the koi. My daughter stretches out along the deck and reaches her hands in to play with the fish. They nibble on her fingers, she giggles, and she learns more about nature.

Emily has dogs, and one of her faithful companions is always by her side. She cares a lot about community and volunteers to help beautify and improve our city. I feel Emily is an inspiration to me and others here in my world simply because she leads by example. Something we should all be doing.

Who do you know in your community that makes a difference for you and how you see the world? Get to know them. Your heart will thank you.
