Most of the student population at Kent State University in Northern Ohio is white. It has a relatively large international student population, she said, who stay within their ethnic groups, for the most part. Sometimes, non-international students find it hard to distinguish those who are international from those who are just of a different race. She's Indian-American and not an international student from India, but she and her Indian-American peers are often thought to be international students, she said. Many students don't take the time to make the distinctions between nationalities. Many are afraid of discovering new cultures. It's difficult, she said.
But it's getting better. Recently, there was a celebration for the Hindu festival of colors, Holi, on campus. Groups are reaching out. People are becoming more open. And just as progress goes, things will change.
