    It was cold that day, the coldest yet, and it would be sub-20s that night. I started panicking around noon when I realized I'd still be in-between towns come sundown. This meant that, in all likelihood, I'd be stealth camping, probably trespassing. Who knows what they'd do if they found me.

    But then I came across Daniel's Drive-In, and it was lunchtime. What the hell, I thought, I'll splurge on a burger. I ordered two chili cheeseburgers, a brown paper bag full of french fries, and a Coke. It was worth the $6.

    But the woman at the counter wouldn't let me pay. She heard me talking to another customer about what I was doing and lunch was on the house, she said.

    For a minute, I wasn't so afraid anymore.
