  • all the matter in the universe
rolled into a ball in his palms

tossed it from hand to hand
back and forth, up and down

    when it dawned on him
    why not fill the emptiness

he took the ball and squeezed
    so tight made it smaller

    and smaller and smaller still
    so small that

    when he opened his hand
    it exploded

    an eruption a billion times
    more powerful than Hiroshima

    matter flew away
    in tiny particles

    they started to slow down
    gathered into atoms

    hydrogen was born
    they collected

    got denser, tighter
    became so hot

    stars were born
    burned up the hydrogen

    what was thrown off
    larger, heavier atoms

    planets were born
    asteroids, comets

    millennium passed
    molten rocks grew cool

    more time
    more atoms

    life was born

    He decided
    to add order

    and made man
