  • 'She was shown a photograph,
a finger pointed at a handsome boy and she heard someone say

'This is the man you will be married to'

She did not understand the word'marriage' because she was just ten years old.
She also did not know that' marriages were arranged settled and girls given away, bonded by word in childhood, till the time came to really get 'decorated dressed painted' and to be sent away to live with 'a stranger' in a yet stranger world.

She looked at the photograph for days, months and then for years. The boy made a place in the secret chambers of her heart.
He was no longer 'a stranger'

    She dreamed about him.
    She thought about him.
    She silently spoke to him.

    She began to admire him.
It all settled in a heart with love. Love so innocent, love so pure, so deep.

Is this how girls are married? She never questioned. She was not supposed to.
And when the elders felt,it was time....
'NO' he says, 'he does not want a cousin marriage" she heard a voice saying.

No one told her anything this time. They just talked.

She did not understand the decision.
She did not realize it was her future being talked about.

    She had no thoughts
    She could not think.
But she had feelings. She was hurt inside.

'He has become a doctor, a heart surgeon,he has gone to the states'
The news kept coming in from time to time...

Then there were more photographs, 'other photographs' black and white papers...
'Why do they show these lifeless papers?
    My heart beats no more...

'On the operation table, as he made the incision his hand trembled a bit but only for a split second
'his name appeared on the bleeding skin of the heart'

It was his imagination,he thought. He was a famous surgeon. His name was everywhere.
He never knew, there were so many patients with ailing hearts
    But a heart of love?

He was never shown a photograph.
