  • The trip started out so well. New boat, new gadgets to work with. 5 boats from Slopez to the larger island, dinner with friends. I stopped by my boat to drop off my purse and check on Purple. I had planned on joining everyone on another boat. I tried to open the sliding door to leave, one stick! Two stick! Three stick and a big pull to the right and WHOA! I flew off the handle backwards. It's not really a handle, its a crevice with a button that you push down to slide the door open. Not much of a hold. I flew down the steps to to the next floor.
  • I don't remember hitting anything. I remember finding myself with my neck twisted sideways. I can't tell you if I was face up or face down. I felt pain and it was wrong. I can't tell you if it was a soft landing or a head over heals fall. I heard questions. Questions: Are you okay? Me: I don't know. Me thinking: I don't remember hitting my head falling under the hatch down the stairs. Oh my shoulder! Oh my neck! Question: Are you hurt enough to call 911? Me: I don't know? Someone lifts me from my crumpled corner. Me thinking: Bed, bed, find the bed. Back, back, back hurts! Oh my neck. Oh! Cry, time to cry. I can't stop. Oh, no Purple is crying with me. No Purple come here. She won't come, she just whines. No, don't be afraid!
  • I hear my husband say, I'm calling 911. Me: okay. Hurts, I fell wrong. Oh so wrong. Husband: You realize they are going to come cart you away? Paramedics: Did you pass out? I don't know. More questions, straps, neck brace. Me: Does this thing float? Before they carry me overboard. Fun ride in an ambulance to emergency. Hospital: Ex-rays, needles, bottles, more crying. Pain, pain. Doctor: Don't move. If you have a fracture you may never get back up. Me: Strong, strong, be strong. Hold still Audrey. It feels like hours.

Finally, something for pain. Cleared, someone was called from bed to look at the ex-rays. You can go home Audrey. Sprained neck, back. Bruised neck, arm, and lower back. I have a step mark on my backside. Torn ligaments. Doctor's orders: Get plenty of rest but move too. It should take about 7 weeks to feel better.

Finally, I get to leave it's 2AM. No car, no shoes, no coat. Got the last taxi on the island (they have 2) to the Marina. Unfortunately, they can't give you front door service to your boat. The docks are very long. So we had a nice long, cold, wet walk from the top of the dock to our boat. Thanks for holding my hand dear husband. Good news, I didn't break my neck! and now....
  • 5 days later - Question to self:

If you fall backwards does it reverse life's disappointments?

But it was a slip, not a fall.
A door that held. A grip lost.
Strange dreams of falling, waking in fear.
    It happens over and over.
Several times a night, a morning.
    And a pounding heart.
    Head aches
    Neck
    Back
    Legs weak
    Wake up!

    Morning stretch
    Slow
    Ache
    Move
    Walk
    Yes, you can still walk!
    Stand, straight.
    Second chance.
    One step forward.
    I made it this far.
    It hurts, I live.
