  • I have high blood pressure, so have begun a winter fitness program. What I have discovered is that running is hard. It takes effort and dedication.

Across the street from my house is this snowman. He if obviously thin, buff, and fit; nothing like those rotund snowmen up the street. I can tell he is a dedicated runner and a shoveler and he is mocking me every time I open the front door.

When I was a kid I never learned how to run properly, which is hideously apparent in my latest attempt. To be clear - my running is not about being skinny or perfect or some other image of a woman from our misplaced media here in the United States. It is about keeping my heart fit.

My android phone has become a tool to help me. I am currently running the very gentle “Couch to 5K” program using my phone and what little gumption I can muster to get my ass out on the track or road three or four times a week. I call the disembodied female voice who gives me orders from my android “THE BITCH” and “THE MEAN LADY” and occasionally “STUPID”. So far I have worked up to week five and feel pretty proud of myself.

Conquering that mean stupid bitch lady has become my number one motivation. That and showing that thin, buff, fit snowman a thing or two.

What are you doing to stay fit?
