  • Ernestine is an 82-year-old photographer. She started taking pictures when she was 49. Today her images belong to museums around the world. At the end of our conversation about her work and career, I asked, 'what has surprised you most about life?'

'I guess that, that the end is so near, and it all of the sudden crept up on me, and I wasn't prepared for that. So much of what I do I feel might be the last time that I'm doing it.

Another thing that's surprised me about life is the reactions that people have to me very often, and I'm not aware of it. Very positive reactions. People stop me in the street and they say, 'I love your eyes,' and they say 'you look like a very happy person,' because I am. I guess that's what surprsied me so much about life; I love it so much and I don't want it to end.'
