  • A friend and I had just gone to see Warm Bodies, and we were taking the Chicago red line home in our respective directions (he was going South, I was heading North). The stop we were waiting at--Illinois and Grand--has a concrete wall dividing the North and South-going trains, but every so often there is an archway that lets you see through to the other side.

There we were, staring at each other while off to my side a group of three panhandlers were harmonizing to The Temptations "My Girl". Across the archway from me, my friend began dancing and mouthing the words of the song to me. After a few minutes, the guy standing next to me (an architect who had moved here from Lebanon; likes Mexican music; was buying a garbage can from Crate and Barrel) asked me, "Do you know him?"

    I replied that I did.

"Oh," he said. "If you didn't he would have been a genius--that's the best pick-up line I've ever seen!"
