  • The commons was buzzing with life. The garbled sound of conversation filled the air that was becoming quiet crowded with words. Words colliding in mid air to form something beautiful... I call it community. The cynic would just call it a crowd.

But I see one couple talking to a young adult in need of a place to stay. I see two people standing by the coffee bar, laughing about what one of their kids just did upstairs. I see an older man downloading some wisdom to a younger gentleman who is trying to be a better husband. There is a teenager boasting of making the varsity team. There are three men talking about what they can do to get all these people out of the building with as little traffic as possible. I see a regular having a casual conversation with a guest about life, church, and why they agree that a safe place for their kids is more important than anything. I even see a couple sitting together by the window. He has his coffee, she has her hot tea. They are talking with hushed excitement about the baby they are about to have but have yet to announce.

The words are garbled, the air is a mess with words and noises that cut through the well decorated commons. The conversation even muffles the sound of the espresso machine as the barista masterfully pulls shots and pours some the perfect latte. But this is hope, this is purpose.

This is my church and it is so much more than a song and a sermon. It is the excited buzz of people living life together with a purpose, and a passion. It is not a place of immense prosperity and or success. Instead it is a place with a presence of encouragement and hope. A place with people that draw the conversation out of you simply with their warm smiles, and free coffee. This is a place where hurting people find a new reason to be happy and smile. Every moment, every friendship, every piece of new hope given starts with a conversation.
