  • Flying, flocking, alighting, they chirp out their songs and pantomime with their wings. They explore, rendezvous and dally, seeking and offering comfort and comity, exchanging experience, trading favors, updating and understanding. And that’s just online.

Beyond typing, dedicating, loving, retelling, we offer and accept invitations, gather together, lend a hand: Kristin and Pete communing over coffee. Barbara helping Jaga start over again many train rides away while Connor house-sits for her. Kathy picking up Ben at the Airport. Fred harkening to his distant lover. Jon, Tim and Gary comparing notes. Johnnie weaving our words together in a book. Geoff vainly helping Deniz with her school essay.

Donations are collected for a beloved author’s solitary suffering, for another to replace his stolen tools. Thoughts and feelings are shared in private messages, over video calls even. Books and artwork by one are purchased by others. And these kindnesses are just a keyhole view of the acts that must be transpiring.

Big birds, small birds, noisy birds, quiet birds, gregarious birds, shy birds, happy birds, sad birds, fleeing their cages to feather each others’ nests.

Cowbirds: More than witnesses to life. Making it larger.
