  • With extreme trepidation I approached the Salon de Peluquaria (I love that word) in the back street near our apartment block armed only with a sketch of what I wanted doing to my hair and rudimentary Spanish, which occasionally turns out to be Italian by mistake.

The salon is unmissable, being painted shocking pink with the name "GLAMOUR" in red above the window. It had an irresistible hand-written sign in the window offering colour, cut and blow dry for 22 euros.

I proffered my sketch. She seemed unfazed. We didn't exactly chat, but did a lot of hand waving. I said "si" quite often. And smiled. She asked me if that was my husband who had come in with me to make the appointment yesterday. I said si. And smiled. She made some gesture with her hands about the lower part of her face which seemed to suggest either that he was a) very handsome or b) in need of a shave. I agreed.

All the time she was doing my hair she was distracted by a) her son who was reluctantly doing his homework at the cash desk when not fiddling with the hair gel, b) her daughter who wanted to have her hair straightened, and wanted to know why this woman didn't speak Spanish like a normal person? and c) numerous phone calls. How did she stay calm?

I still don't know her name. She's lovely.
