  • My grandfather is a US Navy veteran, docked periodically in Hong Kong during in the '50s. I showed him this photograph, began talking about the experience of being on a rooftop in such a dense, vertical city, when he interrupted me.

    "That ain't Hong Kong is it? Where's this photo of?"

    It took a few minutes to convince him that most of the buildings that existed in the city during his stay have been replaced by ever taller towers, at densities unknowable to a man who's lived on 13 of his own acres for the last 30 years.
