  • I left the city to explore country life. I met a farmer named Matt through some friends and told him I wanted to face my decision to eat meat by slaughtering animals that I enjoyed eating. If I could get through it, I would feel like I had earned the right to continue to eat meat. Matt told me to meet him at his farm in a week at 6am in January.

    When I got to his house, he handed me a shot of whiskey and a knife in the kitchen. It was about 5 degrees outside and I was growing weary about heading out in the cold and what lay ahead. We stepped outside and that's when I found out we were slaughtering a cow. As we entered the field, I was struck by the shear size of the red Devon that stood before me. The next thing I remember was the sound of a gunshot and the crunch of our feet over the frozen ground as we hurried in to finish the job...
