  • A few months ago, a drunken Depardieu unbuttoned his trousers and urinated publicly on an Air France plane. I was expecting him to spend a token number of days in prison, but I found out later that he was not even taken to court, let alone sentenced.
    France prides itself for its egalitarian laws, so this was hard to understand. This contrasts sharply with a well-known story about a Finnish foreign minister who was found drunk at the wheel of his car. When he was being sent to prison, he indignantly explained that he could not go to prison as he was due to greet a delegation arriving at Helsinki airport just the next day. As a concession, the judge ordered that he be sent to do his forced labour at the self-same Helsinki airport
