  • Yesterday I see this Statue of Liberty advertising tax services standing on the side of the street in 14 degree temperatures getting sprayed by salty, dirty snow, and dancing. She waves at me when I drive past.

I turn around and drive back to Lady Liberty, park my car, grab my camera, and shout, “Hey Lady, you look cold!”

Turns out its not a lady. When I walk up, a dark, bearded man lifts his mask. He is grinning from ear-to-ear and says in a very deep voice, “I’m not a lady! And YES, I’m freezing!!”

I laugh and we start up a conversation. He is remarkably cheerful having stood out in the freezing weather for hours getting splashed by cars. He tells me that in a down economy a job is a job. He wants to work and will take any job he can get.

He grins and says, “this job is worth it even with the cold; all I have to do is be myself and make people smile. I am grateful!”

He gave me a terrific reminder about hard work and the American way – any job is better than no job at all.
