  • Present from America: (Dedicated to Geoff)

My sister, who lives in America, brings us presents each year when she comes to visit us. She asks us to sit around the big table in the living room and then starts passing down the presents wrapped very nicely. Just like a cat waiting to be fed with her long waited meal we all keep our eyes on the presents passed along to reach its intended recipient. When the recipient starts opening the package, among the rattling sound of the wrapping paper, the rest tries to focus on emerging present to see what it is. And then they judge the present to be suitable for the recipient, or the reason my sister decided to choose that particular present for that particular person.

Again in one of summer day we all gathered in Kemer in my parents’ house. This time, my brother in law, Geoff, asked us to gather around to dinner table in the living room. We all lined up just like colorful beads in a beautiful necklace. After he distributed everybody’s presents, he came up to me and said Ayşegül; I chose this for you from a second-hand shop. I hope you will make a good use of it and remember me each time you use them. When I opened the package I saw these two well-made pots. He is a gourmet cook himself and knows what a cook needs in his or her kitchen. When I returned my own house in Antalya, I washed and disinfected these pants and started using them. Despite the fact that it has been eight years since I received them, they still come very handy in my kitchen. Do I need to warm up soup, let me get Geoff’s pots! Do I need a smaller pot to store away the leftover food, let me get Geoff’s pots! Do I need to make medicinal linden tea to comfort my sick son, let me get Geoff’s pots! His present proved to be so useful that I was not able to replace them since. Thank you so much Enişte!

Now it is the end of the year and I am doing my shopping for year-end presents to my family and friends. For each present I choose, I think of that person, and try to imagine how useful that present would be for him, or whether he would just throw it away or give it to someone else. Gratifying feeling of choosing present for someone is one blessing of greeting a New Year for me. I love the experience but then, I cannot resist the temptation to be a detective to follow the person to find out how he made use of my present. I wish to be bewitched to enter his house and see what came of my present. That would be very time-consuming and tiring to chase the each present I give away. I wish the person just let me know how they used the present I chose for them. That is why I would like to let Geoff know that I made the most use of the present he chose for me. They are still my go-to utensils in the kitchen after eight years.
