  • Wow, the very last thing in the world I was expecting today was for one of my stories to be selected as Cowbird Story of the Day. I had one of those days where I was booked solid from 8:30 through 5:30, conducting interviews (6 total) all day, plus a high level briefing on this major project I'm involved in, and was just checking my hotmail real quick for 15 minutes at lunch time, when I saw a message from Kathy Weinberg congratulating me on Story of the Day. I didn't even know which story got picked, but was very pleased when I saw which one did. That was always one of my favorite stories. I posted it on my 5th day on Cowbird. That's the first time I've had a Story of the Day. I've posted 520 to date, so I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. I was hoping to get the record for most stories posted without a Story of the Day selection. So, we'll have to see if anyone else has made it to 520. I love records!
  • Sometime over the summer when I was bouncing around down in South Carolina, getting goofy in the heat down there, I wrote a story likening getting Story of the Day to getting your picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone. Well, I've finally done it! Move over there, James Dean, and make some room for Hawkeye Pete Egan B!

I was seriously thinking of just retiring and resting on my laurels, now that I've reached this storied pinnacle, but Kathy said, and I quote - "Enjoy the feeling and then roll up your sleeves and get back to work! And then enjoy the feeling some more!" I've been following Kathy and her brother Ben on Cowbird practically since I got here, and the day my writing can light a candle to either of theirs, then I might feel like I've "arrived"! Until then, I'm going to follow Kathy's advice, and get back to work! And, yes, I will enjoy the feeling some more, too. I do consider it an honor, and I will savor this moment. I'm loving it! Thanks, Cowbird Story of the Day selection committee!

Well, Dr. Hook, what do you have to say about all of this?

"Well, we're big rock singers, we got golden fingers and we're loved everywhere we go,
We sing about beauty and we sing about truth, at ten-thousand dollars a show!
We take all kinds of pills that give us all kind of thrills, but the thrill we'll never know,
Is the thrill that'll getcha when you get your picture on the cover of the Rollin Stone (Rollin' Stone)

Wanna see my picture on the cover (Stone)
Wanna buy five copies for my mother (Stone)
Wanna see my smilin' face on the cover of the Rollin' Stone!"

(Dr. Hook - "Cover of the Rolling Stone")

Thanks everyone for the loves and the beautiful retells, and for helping me to enjoy this moment.

O.K., back to work - on with the show! The Hawk must fly!

    Hawkeye Pete
