  • This morning I let our Vietnamese nanny tie a string around my ring finger because it would take down the swelling in my left eye lid. A swelling that has not entirely gone away despite a course of antibiotics, a visit to an ophthalmologist and more topical ointments. She said back home they rub their hands on the bamboo mats of the bed till its hot and place it on the eye. And then they tie a string around the ring finger of the left hand. She said this works every time and you won't need a doctor or medication to make it go away. So there is a string around the ring finger of my left hand.

I kind of love a world where faith and science coexist, where strings have an equal chance of success as a doctor's prescription. And why not, reason and rationale explain so much but at the end of the day, while I sneak down the stairs at midnight to stuff his stocking, I'm going to wake up the next morning and confirm to my child that yes it is a known fact that Santa has 8 reindeer.
