  • I can't remember when it started, but I decided one day to collect beer mats. I was fascinated by the advertisements, typography, colors, etc. I wanted to understand the process of how these were made and why. Many years later as a designer, I have come to cherish these coasters even more as I lose myself while studying the tiny designs and illustrations. One day, many years ago my father surprised me with a couple of small packages. Inside were tons of beer mats from all over. Most of them were European with many coming from Germany. It turns out that my Grandfather had been collecting beermats too and my father had found these with his belongings. I am assuming they were for his bar that he has established in his basement. I would give anything to talk with him about where he got all of these mats and what was he going to do with them. Unfortunately, he died two days before my 5th birthday. I feel in a small way that so many years later I am carrying on his collection, and I had no idea that he had started it. What I find so amusing about looking through the old beermats is that I don't drink. I have 242 and counting.
