  • Robert Bickel is a painter, architect and philosopher. He is also my uncle. Robert is obsessed with time. He collects clocks, most of which don't work and that pile up in his house. He is constantly pointing at his watch, raising his eyebrows and telling me to hurry, lest I miss something which is profound, the nature of which I can't quite grasp. It is not a normal obsession like most of us... like the business man obsessed with efficiency, or the worker who keeps looking at the clock at the end of his work day. Perhaps his obsession with time is rooted in some deeper insecurity that we all share.

    Robert paints massive ocean waves that disintegrate into mathematical and geometrical forms, suggesting a deeper methodical reality lies just under the organic forms of nature. His house (once a retirement home for the elderly) is cold labyrinth filled with his paintings and sculptures which are reflections on existence and nonexistence and the passing of time.
