  • Driving down the California 101 highway, between Jolon and San Miguel, I felt the urge to write down some of the thoughts running through my mind. I was driving from Berkeley to Santa Barbara, a long drive which always gives me time to think about what I want my life to mean.
I could only find a brown bag to write some things down on, and the steering wheel to use as support. I knew I wouldn't be able to get any of the thoughts out of my mind until these words were stained onto a surface of some kind.

What is important enough to paint? If I can take a photograph of anything in the world..
    Painting gives you complete control.
    Painting is bodily.
Fast and slow actions of the hand mimick the rhythm of the mind, and the energy of the body.
Painting can be both grotesque and beautiful at the same moment.

The scale and relation of my own body to the canvas is essential.
    Emotional barriers and psychological barriers.

    Writing makes my thoughts real.
    Painting makes my emotions real.
