  • October was fraught: work, shortening days, and the looming election. I was feeling impotent at the little I could do about the latter. "When this election is done," I said to friends, "whoever wins, I'm going to get more involved."

Election day came. I voted. I woke up 4am to watch the results come in back home. I was relieved.

It's December now and tomorrow marks the turning of seasons. Longest night will reach the tipping point and begin the long handover to the day. Tomorrow is the last day of work before a week and a half of holiday, including Christmas.

"In the new year," I tell myself, "in the new year I'll get involved."
