  • A song from 1972, by a pop group called “Badfinger”, most of whose songs really didn’t have much to say as far as I was concerned, has stayed with me through the years. I thought this particular song had quite a lot to say, and I have taken its lyrics to heart and tried to incorporate its message into the code that I live by.

I haven’t gotten it down “perfectly” yet, but I make a continual effort to live by this code. In the 12 Step program, we learned to seek progress, not perfection. I keep trying.

The “successful conversation” the song talks about, can never begin with shrill shouting or pointing fingers, citing conspiracy theories and getting anyone who doesn’t believe as you do to go on the defensive. I have yet to see a conversation with any of those qualities end successfully. They usually don’t take you very far. Everyone digs deeper into their positions, sure that they are right, and all of the other idiots are idiots. Then, we all become idiots.

The better ones begin with a mutual respect, a sincere desire to understand, a willingness to walk a mile or ten in the other’s mocassins, and trying to see the world from another’s perspective. Taking a moment to consider what motivates those who see things differently than I do. They’re not idiots. They’re just like me. They want the world to be a better place than it is. They’re looking for answers, and the first place we go is to what we believe.

I’m doing the same thing. Looking for answers. I’m freakin’ clueless, folks. I don’t know what will make the world right again. Sorry…I’m just not that smart. I don’t know anyone who is. It’s a complex place, growing more complex by the day. If there is an answer….we must find it together, or not at all. We have to work together – or continue to grow apart, and there will be plenty more of the same if we keep going that way.

That’s not the world that I want…I don’t know anyone who wants that. Do you?

    Perfection

There is no real perfection, there'll be no perfect day
Just love is our connection, the truth in what we say
There's no good revolution, just power changing hands
There is no straight solution, except to understand

So listen to my song, of life
You don't need a gun, or a knife
Successful conversation, will take you very far

There is no real perfection, there'll be no perfect man
Just peace is our connection, for giving all you can
There's no good kind of killing, just power taking life
It's all good blood that's spilling, to make a bigger knife

So listen to my song, of life
You don't need a gun, or a knife
Succesful conversation, can take you very far
So listen to my song, of life
You don't need a gun, or a knife

Succesful conversation, can take you very far
Succesful conversation, will take you very far
Succesful conversation, will take you very far
