  • I live in what you would call suburban sprawl, but to me it's our home, our community. I'm a fan of urban living, my daughter lives in the city, but my heart loves the country, so our current suburban lifestyle is a compromise. A favorite past time of mine is to drive the rural roads in St. Charles County, located west of St. Louis, to take photos. This photo was taken a couple of years ago, located in the new Broemmelsiek Park. In a recent visit to the park, I realized the home was gone. Where the old frame farm house had stood lies an uninterrupted field of native grass. This photo gives my hobby some weight, the picture now stands as documentation of the parkland's agrarian past, when the Broemmelsiek's farmed the land. This small farmhouse reminds me of the generous gift this family, the Broemmelsiek's gave to our community, 494 acres of parkland. I am grateful for the new dog park, the hiking trails and the views. This park gives my dogs room to run, and swim, allows me the opportunity to soak in the view, and relax. A dose of nature is the best prescription, don't you agree?

Not too far from this park is the KATY trail, a converted railroad bed to trail that follows alongside the Missouri River, this area just west of my suburban home is rich in century farms, river bluffs, wineries and forest. The views are Grandma Moses art worthy. Yes, many wineries even host Plein air events and photographers have unending photo opportunities. Through my car rambles, with each For Sale sign, I come across, I have become more and more protective of this countryside. If you feel as I do, Google "land trust" and the area you are passionate on conserving. I discovered The KATY Land Trust through this method and will be donating to the cause. Maybe even getting involved. Then breathe.
