  • Twelfth night was a few days ago, so Mardi Gras season has officially begun. Now, every day at around 3:00, after the high schools get out, you can hear the marching bands practicing for the upcoming parades.

Today I was walking my dogs and I could hear drummers running through their routines - the tenors tapdancing over the deep thuds of the bass drums, the snares shepherding the band along and keeping them together. They would run through a few measures, then stop, then start again, then stop again. The tenors went by themselves for a few minutes, then the bass and snares came back in. There were false starts, but they still have four weeks before the parades kick off. Things are coming together.

Living in New Orleans right now is like getting to hang out at the sound check of the coolest and biggest concert that ever existed.
