  • Today, a friend of me decided after decades of confusion and fear to be an artist. On the embarkment of their career I sent them the following useful advice:

"All for the sake of the story.

Every trial, every hesitation. If you get arrested it is for the sake of a story. If you get crushed underfoot, it is for the sake of the story. If you see a good rock, leak a good sneeze and fly a far spit- it is for the sake of the story.

(Fill in your life here) for the sake of the story!

There is no shame, there is only now and past and the hopes of things to come in the face of the travail of the story.

Just will it. You are a conduit of can-do, and you can do it.

I am loosey-goosey and have seen a lot of failure. If your plan fails you will reinvent yourself. If it succeeds, you will still re-invent yourself. Don't fight yourself. Artists are conduits- good artists are not making their work alone, they are being channeled by some universal love force. Perhaps you have felt this? I feel this as writing my best work or when I dance sometimes in front of a bunch of people. Orange light bolts through my fingertips, passing through me from the sun. The Mothers in the audience see can them, and I feel suspended in a magical operation- my body carrying out the plans of someone who is wiser than me."
