  • We were lucky enough to get tickets to see the Olympics.
We had them before we even knew we were pregnant.
Boyfriend went into childcare panic as to whether we would be able to go.
    Enter Nanna and Grandad
    And Hey Presto! Problem solved.

    Train tickets booked.
Day vaguely planned (a bit too vaguely as it turned out).
    And there we were
watching the freestyle wrestling at the Olympics.
    The Olympics!

    The crowd was buzzing.
I know little to nothing about wrestling
but after a couple of fights,
I’m not even sure of the technical term
I got the gist of it.

    The crowd was mainly Iranian.
    A huge surge of
    whenever an Iranian competitor
    was fighting.
By the end of the third fight we were joining in.
    Swept up in the atmosphere.

    clap clap clap
    clap clap clap

A mixture of men, women, children and tiny babies
made up the throng of Iranian support,
and others, like us, joining in the frenzy.

It was only the next day that I stopped and thought.
Isn’t Iran a country with human rights issues?
I’m a member of Amnesty International and quick trip to their website proves me
    chillingly right.
Iran still has appalling human rights violations, particularly against women,
    I shiver.
They still have executions and stonings.
    My stomach churns.

    clap clap clap
    now falls flat.
