  • When I worked for the Police department, we were in the office until 11:00 p.m. on weekdays and on call with beepers 24 hours a day the rest of the time. We took turns with the beeper on weekends and holidays.

I remember being called out one Thanksgiving, just as I was about to sit down to dinner with my family. The officer said he was very sorry to bother me, but he was at the apartment of two sisters who had been feuding all day long. One of the them had just picked up the main course, a baked ham, and thrown it across the room at her sister, who had ducked to avoid being hit. The officer, who had been standing right behind the other sister had been hit squarely in the chest by the flying ham. He said if I didn't get over there right away he was going to arrest both of them for assaulting a police officer. I rushed to the scene, and was able to get the two sisters to calm down and talk to each other, under threat of arrest. They soon agreed to stop the battle and sit down to their Thanksgiving dinner. I told them I was sorry they had lost their main course. "Oh, don't worry about that," one of them said to me, and they both laughed as the other sister picked the ham up from the floor and brushed it off a little, and put it back on the plate in the middle of the table.

They invited me to stay for dinner but I politely declined.
