  • Longhand

Remember when we wrote poems to each other,
poems and long long letters? We shared
not only our meals, the view from our windows,
the plants in our garden, and our little tribulations,
but also our biggest secrets. The time I kissed
the bus driver, the time you struck your daughter
and cried for weeks over that breech of trust.

Remember when those poems and letters
were hand-written, years before our penmanship
degenerated into scrawl from using computers?
    Remember when I made hand-painted,
hand-crafted cards, each one unique, and just for you?

Recently, I read that schools no longer require
or teach penmanship. No one is expected to know
how to write longhand. But I still remember.
I could make you a card, write to you on paper,
compose you a poem, slip it in an envelope,
decorate the address, and paste on a stamp.
You could wait and wait for days until it comes,
open my card and hold my heart in your hands.

    for Kiki Suarez

Poem for Kiki Suarez, illustration is one of my handmade cards, a watercolor. The poem is a revision of an earlier poem called Letter to Kiki Suarez. I am preparing poems for a reading. They need to be simplified somewhat for reading aloud. The reading is Sunday, you're invited.
