  • We were gathered together, five men in the moonlit night miles away from the city that in which we all grew up, brought together through a common love for the freedom that only a mountain escape could bring.

An islet in the middle of a wide river allowed us to share a bottle of gin with the slowly flowing water soothing our restless minds. There was nothing around us save the small stones, the water, and a family of ducks that hadn't quite noticed the time. The full moon lent us just enough light to see all around us, yet not too much as to keep us fully awake.

We talked of many things. Of wars and mountains, of loves past and adventures to come. Five men who, just the night before, had not known anything about each other save their names, were forging fraternal bonds that only shared adventure could forge.

In that moment, an indescribable peace was upon me that no demon in this life could shake.
