Not long ago Broken Vegas, a great local rock band, played loud and proud at the Déjà Vu bar in Chicago on a cold night in winter. Thick with people and noise, the bar was hot and overcrowded with revelers. Outside it was cold and there was solitude in a city sort of way. Across the street from the Déjà Vu is a park; silent at the midnight hour. Taxi’s drive past but no one talks. They smoke. And stand. And think.
I do not smoke. So inside I dance and shout to my friends above the music. We laugh and sing and share a night of friendship – putting our jobs, our problems, and the cold off for a few hours.
At just the right moment I look up and see this picture through the front door of the Déjà Vu - my friends on the street in contemplation. A taxi drives by suspended in light. It is Chicago at midnight.
