  • I like to make toys. Generically we call these little crocheted animals amigurumi, but I make my bigger so they probably don't qualify.

Young Kevin - known to like stuffed animals - will be getting this as part of his mom's Christmas gift box. I am her secret Santa in our crochet group. If the name of our swap, "Who's Spiking the Eggnog?", is any indication of our twisted sense of humor and mischievousness...well, the cat's out of the bag. How many lives is that now?

I don't name the penguin. I could say I don't want to get attached, but the truth is....he is ugly and I am embarrassed.

It is his eyes. They should be the window to his little soul. Instead they are free floating blobs on his face. Random. Bulls-eyes. Target practice. Shock. Surprise. Deformed. Rejected. Mocked.

But for 1/8th of an inch he is a small freak. The whites of his eyes hovering over the white of his neck. If by some miracle the two would touch he could be just another penguin. Jauntily beaked, flippers akimbo, cool rasta slouch hat. Just one of the gang. Building his nest. Anticipating the eggs. Going about his business unencumbered by a previously grotesque disfigurement.

One eighth of an inch is all it takes to join the ranks of the inconspicuous.

    I wish I was a penguin.
