  • A recent television commercial featured a Mao-like Chinese professor addressing an auditorium of Chinese students. His topic was the reasons great nations ultimately fall. He claimed they abandoned the principles on which they were founded, and this is the reason they collapse.

    It is these principles, Kiki, that I will address. In all of history, we are the only nation founded on the highest and most noble principle envisioned; the absolute right of the individual to be free.

    “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

    In the past, this statement has been called the Universal Franchise, as it does not restrict itself only to the people of this nation, but to all men and women on this planet. And it is the preservation of this statement that motivates the young men and young women of this nation to volunteer their lives.

    I will not tell you we have reached the ideal expression of that statement in this nation, for that would be a lie. We have struggled with institutionalized discrimination, slavery, gender bias, poverty, and a slew of illness so profane as to infect our souls. Yet we survive.

    Hitler and his troops were doomed to failure, for while their goal was to conquer the world, their motivation was a world without mercy, without justice. The Soviets collapsed for similar reasons. The People's Republic of China, while it appears at this time to flourish, will ultimately succumb to the needs of their people and pay for the damage they are doing to their own environment. Yet we will survive.

    Why support the troops? Because they defend the principles of freedom. Because they are willing to lay down their lives for the preservation of those freedoms. Because they sacrifice their lives, their families, and their freedoms to stand on a wall and tell the rest of us, “You can sleep safely tonight, I won't let anyone harm you.”

    We support out troops because they represent what is pure and good in all of us. May God bless them and keep them from harm's way.
