  • EXT. MORNING - SCHOOLYARD

MR. OAKES pats his two children, EMILY and BENJAMIN on the
head and strides up the concrete walkway through the school
grounds. Benjamin watches his father and brushes back his
golden curls. His smile is angelic and his cheeks are rosy
but his eyes are pinched and hard.

MR. BEN stands near the pool fence watching the students play an early morning soccer
    game.

BENJAMIN rushes to join the game and shoves a younger
player out of the way to get to the ball. He scores a goal
and spins around to see if his father is watching.

    MR. OAKES
    (stops beside Mr. Ben)
Could I have a word, Mr. Ben? It's
about the bus last night. It's the
bus to the British High Commission
    compound. Mr. Isaac's bus.

    MR. BEN
Good morning. Yes, Mr. Isaac told
me about a problem on the late bus
    run.

    MR. OAKES
    (steps closer)
Benjamin wanted to get off the bus
at Jordan's house. He said Mr.
Isaac blocked him and would not let
    him off the bus.

    MR. BEN
Those are the rules. Unless there
is a note or a phone call from you
kids are dropped off at home. Mr.
Isaac was following the bus rules.

    MR. OAKES
    Yes, yes.

    MR. BEN
Did Benjamin tell you what he did?

    MR. OAKES
He said he tried to get past, he
    may have kicked out.

    MR. BEN
He may have. Mr. Isaac said
Benjamin kicked him and called him
    a fucker.

    MR. OAKES
Well, he should not have said that
but the point is Benjamin told us
that Mr. Isaac punched him and
shoved him in the seat. Now I
    know...

    EXT. MORNING - SOCCER
    FIELD

Benjamin loses the ball to a SKINNY BOY. He follows the action to the front of the goal and jabs an elbow into
the skinny boy knocking him down.

    EXT. MORNING - WALKWAY
    BY POOL FENCE

    MR. OAKES (CONT'D)
I have to tell you I am concerned
    about Benjamin's safety. But if
you are going to talk with all the
children on the bus and make the
    necessary changes in the transport
    department then...

    EXT. DAY
SCHOOLYARD - PICNIC TABLE Later in the day

Mr. Ben sits at a picnic table with FIFI amidst the commotion
    of morning recess.

    FIFI
I didn't see anything. Mr. Isaac
let me sit in the very front seat.
It was the first time. I didn't
    see anything.

    EXT. DAY
    SCHOOLYARD - SANDBOX

Mr. Ben sits on the edge of the sandbox with LUCY-VIOLET.

    LUCY-VIOLET
And then, Benjamin, he kicked Mr.
Isaac and he called him the F word.

CANDACE, Lucy-Violet's younger sister races over and stops
inches from Mr. Ben's face. She has two fingers in her mouth
    and a runny nose.

    CANDACE
And, and, and Benjamin, he called
Mr. Isaac, he said, Benjamin said
the F word, Mr. Ben. And he kicked
    the bus.

    EXT. DAY
    SCHOOLYARD - SOCCER PITCH

Mr. Ben sits on the concrete steps along the bank above the
soccer field. JORDAN sits one seat below and rolls a soccer
ball back and forth between his feet.

    JORDAN
Yes. That's right. Mr. Isaac hit
him. I was in the two-seater, you
know just behind the three seater
by the door and Benjamin he was
right at the door of the bus and
Mr. Isaac he was down right in
front of the door. Benjamin he
might have kicked a bit but he
    didn't swear or anything.

    INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY

Mr. Ben stands outside the doorway to a classroom with MS
    MANDY.

    MR. BEN
Ms Mandy, can I ask a question
    about Benjamin's bus?

    MS MANDY
Right, you mean the bus to the
village of St. Mary's Meade then.

    MR. BEN
    Yeah, that's the one.

    EXT. DAY SCHOOLYARD - SANDBOX

Mr. Ben leans against the fence between the playground and
the parking lot next to the sandbox. Benjamin kicks at the
loose sand along the edge of the sandbox. His squints and
    nods while Mr. Ben talks.

    MR. BEN
So could you show me just what
    happened Benjamin. Pretend I'm Mr.
Isaac OK. And you are in the bus
standing by the door and I am down
here standing on the ground at the
bottom of the steps. I'll scrunch
down because Mr. Isaac he isn't
    tall like me.

Benjamin stands on the top of the wall around the sandbox.
Mr. Ben is below him almost on his knees.

    MR. BEN (CONT'D)
    So you kicked

    BENJAMIN
    Yeah, I guess.

He suddenly swings out a foot which comes level with Mr.
Ben's head. Mr. Ben brings his hands up.

    MR. BEN
And then Mr. Isaac hit you like
    with his fist.

    BENJAMIN
Yes. Right here. In the stomach.

Benjamin grimaces and rubs his belly. Mr. Ben swings his fist
up toward Benjamin and reaches about halfway to Benjamin's
    stomach.

    MR. BEN
    Yes. I see.
