  • Life in France: I needed wood, and Monsieur Neaume was recommended. I called him, and after a lot of spelling out of names and addresses (oh my inaccurate accent) he agreed to come on Friday with two cubic metres of dry wood for my stove.

I had no idea how much wood this would be. I tried to visualise it, and failed.

"Un stère de bois est égale à un volume de un mètre de haut, sur un mètre de long, sur un mètre de large, donc un mètre cube non plein."

It turned out to be a pickuptruckfull.

    M. Neaume, who was a silver moustachioed older man with a very friendly manner, parked the pickup close to my gate, and proceeded to throw the logs down towards my cellar. I stood by the cellar steps and dodged the rain of logs while collecting and stacking them out of the rain.

Meanwhile I heard about his donkeys, which live in the field next to his house in L'Isle Jourdain.

I am proud to report that he commended my stacking efforts.
