  • It had been in the back of my mind throughout the day at work. It wasn’t so important that I couldn’t think about anything else or that it was the first thing I did when I got home, but I remembered to look for it before bed. I found the book on the shelf and had to read for awhile before finding the passage on page 181.

“I’ve got to do something. I’ve got to something I really want to do. I’ve lost my self-respect.”

I considered the ways these words were mine, then thought better of them. A fictional girl from ninety years ago said that, I told myself.

I put the book back on the spot on the shelf and got into bed.
