  • While walking with my best friend of 6 years down a quiet back road, our playful and lighthearted conversation turned strangely serious. Hurts from the past and concerns of the future pushed their way out of our minds and into the air between us.
In the years passed, I had always seen her as fragile. Not weak, but something small and innocent that I needed to protect. When I came back after being away for a year, I realized something was different.
She seemed stronger, in control, and on the doorstep of the life I had heard her dream about since we were little. As our conversation wore on, this realization planted itself deeper into my consciousness.
    She had changed.
    Or maybe I had.
Right as I was about to comment on it, I heard her gasp. As I looked over I saw her staring at the ground. A butterfly had just been hit by a passing car and had rolled to her feet. She debated whether or not to pick it up."Careful!" I interjected, but she did anyways. It stayed frozen in her hands until she spoke to it. It slowly tried to move and stretch its wings. She carried it as we walked until it was strong enough to fly again. Happy with the recovery, she watched it fly out of sight. "Huh. Tough little thing! Not as fragile as it looks..." Just as I was thinking how ironic that statement was, she added on, "Just like you."
