  • This is my Christmas present. Yes it's early, but it popped up, for sale. And my lovely husband decided to buy it for me.

    I have a sort-of connection with this picture, as it was painted by the sister-in-law of the dead rector with whom I became ever so slightly obsessed for a couple of years.

    The sisters-in-law (of the second wife) are fascinating in their own right. As daughters of a gentleman they were unable to work professionally. So Lucette Barker, the painter of this painting, only ever worked as an amateur.

    I have no idea who the subject of this picture may be, other than the fact that her name is on the back, along with the signature of the artist.

    Rita Thompson, Mrs Jennings, I imagine you were one of Lucette's friends. And you were beautiful. And you still are. And I feel a connection with you.
