  • note: There are certain life lessons for a soul that keeps repeating, and sometimes we are compelled to write about it again and again. This is a theme that keeps recurring for me. As I went to check on my plants and I saw this red leaf among the green ones. So please forgive me for this repetition but I find that seeing ourselves as different and separate from others is the biggest obstacle to feeling compassion and connection and thus understanding between us. So it's a theme my mind keeps focusing on and I think the following story is probably an adaptation although I do not recall where I read this.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Red leaf: looked at itself and then looked around and thought I'm different from the rest, why am I different, am I special or am I a victim of the light refracted wrongly?!
Some green leaves laughed because they found the colour red a bit odd, they didn't talk, they just kept themselves at a leaf's distance. But a few others treated red leaf as unique and appreciated it, we understand our greenery against your redness much more, some said. You have a different perspective and that's good. Red leaf often felt that being different is sometimes a curse. But at the same time, it started to take pride in its perhaps flawed difference as if it was something special. A burden it must bare.
One day an ant came and ran across red leaf and green leaves. The ant ran across both types of leaves, felt the texture, oh, you are no different, you are neither a victim or special because of your colour, you are the same, can't you see you are the same plant exclaimed the ant.
But my perspective is unique and special and that's why I am sometimes not accepted, or am made fun of, I stand out you see, explained red leaf. No. Actually, that's not it at all said the Ant. Its because you reflect an image of yourself as different because you think you are a red leaf and thus special/ flawed but you don't see you are the plant. That's when red leaf saw, wow, it's not just a leaf but a plant. With many many leaves, some red, some green.
Soon red leaf turned into a green leaf and some green leaves turned brown. Then it understood, everything keeps intermingling and changing and it can't stay fixed, indeed, soon perhaps it would be time to fall away! As it was preparing for this, it saw how firm the plant was, it saw the earth where it would fall. It saw itself as the plant, growing from the earth and it smiled to the sun! It was ready to glide on the air, when the time came. It was ready to surrender to the wind, knowing it was the plant and not just the leaf!
