    What struck me most about this photo was
    that it appeared to be a desolate dream,
    shadows of yesterday
    the quiet after the storm
    the burning tears.

    * * *

    Eighty homes burned like matchboxes
    All that was not flooded was on fire

    Sit upon a cement slab
    mouth agape
    clutching the last piece
    of yesterday pondering
    if this is a nightmare or the apocalypse

    Yesterday’s warnings
    and what world is this?
    Through a door
    all hopes and
    dreams have fled.

    Through what door?
