  • Oon is about 90 years old. She lives in the village of Sukhothai in northern Thailand. She cannot walk or see, the unfortunate result of working 70 years bent over in rice fields. Her family has about 40 acres, and they harvest it for themselves and the village. She relies on her 2 grown children to bring her food and does not want to go to the hospital. "They are busy working" she says. She was happy to have visitors and welcomed us into her home eagerly. She held my hand as we talked through her friend, and our guide, Ann, who told us to call her Yaai- which means grandmother. I asked Yaai the secret to long life and happiness. She said "I don't know, I lived a simple life. I just worked hard. I kept busy."
