  • today a farmer shared with me his ways.

jean, sixty-seven, is one of the happiest people that i've met in my days on the planet. he welcomed us warmly onto his land and eagerly shared with us, through the patient translating of our friend sylveriene, his story. he showed us some of the bean and sorghum harvest and then referred lovingly to each different tree: papaya, mango, avocado and macadamia. the group of small children that gathered around looked up to this smiling man as he showed us his soul in fruit trees.

he then led us into the forest of beautifully chaotic banana trees that conceal the rows of unassuming kasava saplings. he smiled cheek to cheek as he dug up a fresh kasava root which he promptly cut and served to us.

the wisdom in the wrinkles of this man's hands and the lines that framed his eyes did not need a translator. we could feel the love in his handshake and taste the happiness in the baby bananas he gave to us for the drive home.
