  • Jim'll Fix It was a show that children of my generation grew up on. It was what you looked forward to on a Saturday night. Jimmy Saville, the famous DJ, would fulfill a child's dream on telly and all children watching spent that hour imagining the glories he could unfold for us, if only he would choose us. This odd uncle figure, who seemed to always smoke a huge cigar, and wear Mr T style chains, gave kids the opportunity to sing with their heroes, drive tanks, be a super hero for the day.

It became a game when I got older to ask people what they asked jimmy to fix. The assumption was that we all wrote, and we all did.

My first letter was sent asking if I could spend the day in a padded cell in a straight jacket. I had seen Howling Mad Murdoch do it in the A-Team and it looked like fun. I was not chosen. Not put off, I asked for the chance to sing with A-ha. Someone had done it on the show the week before and I was inspired. Again not chosen. None of my friends were.

And now the news is out. Jimmy Saville allegedly was one of the most prolific paedophiles known to the UK. More and more stories are coming out, a year after his death. Some of those children had their dream come true at too high a price. The dream maker becomes child catcher and we are a generation in shock, in mourning for the loss of innocence.
