  • What if leaf were just a notion locked deep inside a trunk,
    a simple thought that cellulose grew,
    through infancy that lignin knew,
    to bud & green to flourish,
    a canopy of colour
    that fell to floor of earth?

    Autumn then for leaf would bring
    its life to fullest hue,
    humus & the earthworm
    would together weave it through,
    back to polysaccharides
    return, return, renew
    back to soil & longing
    dust for gazillions more of them
    leaves inside a trunk.
