  • Reading Dave Lauer's "Concerned Citizen", I was reminded of a similar situation I found myself in back in the late 50's. I was an art director in a small agency run by a man I can only describe as a "Bantam Rooster". I was expected to stay late or work weekends at a moment's notice. All that tension had me eating indigestion tablets like crazy. Did I mention that the previous art director had a breakdown? I knew I was going to have ulcers if I didn't find another job.

Then I heard of a group of artists forming a loose knit studio and could use a layout man. I met with them and was hooked. But how to manage without a regular paycheck? Luckily I knew of a few account execs who would give me work.

Now to talk it over with my wife and 3 kids. Would they be willing to eat beans and do without until I got on my feet? Bless them all. They had my back.

Now years later, I still think of the way they stood by me and of all the great times we had together.

So if you want to jump ship, do it!
