  • I've been waging a war
    in my own backyard
    Consider this
    my formal declaration
    I surrender

    I fought valiantly but
    there are just too many
    I vanquish a few
and hundreds more take their place
    I concede - I give up
    The maple leaves win

Besides, I secretly love the leaves
    my fight has been halfhearted
    they have turned my yard
    into a colorful crazy quilt
    sailing down from above
    at the slightest whisper
    of encouragement from the breeze

    the leaves fall
    no farewells
    no long drawn out
    goodbyes, they
    scatter along the sidewalks
    crunch underfoot
    blow willy-nilly
    down empty streets
    shine vibrant in the rain
    the leaves fall
    and its magic
