    Shakerag Hollow, Sewanee, TN.
    April 2012.

where we slept as many nights outside as we did inside. the other dorm room, we called it.

last time she passed through, we spent another night there. she, enraptured by her place, and i watching.

the smell of leaves decomposing, can't you smell them?
the sound of cicadas calling, can't you hear them?
the feeling of roots digging (into our backs), can't you feel them?
the sight of trees swaying, can't you see them?
the taste of fall coming, can't you feel it?

when she left this time, i found new writing on my refrigerator door. her address, and...

"It may be that when we no longer know what to do,
we have come to our real work
and when we no longer know which way to go,
we have begun our real journey.
The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings.

-W. Berry via Potter's office wall"

Shakerag taught us that. Our place taught us that.
