  • I.

    Bang

    II.

Cradle me in your warm bosom
    Dapple the sunlight on me
    Keep me from the endless
    Loneliness and Emptiness
Sing a violent storm of new

    III.

    To leave mother's embrace
    Sucking air, foreign and poisonous
    Longing for the gentle waves
    Rock me to sleep, comfort
But something is pushing at me
Driving me to take that first step
My fin pressed into the mud
    Gasping

    IV.

Oh give me the forest green!
Steamy hot jungle wet with rain and dew
Endless detritus to cushion my feet
Make nests among the black earth
Watch my children hatch and grow
See them leave to make their own
Look to the skies, the blue skies
A shadow falls across the earth
    The air burns...

    V.

    It is cold and hard
    Life is cruel
    No food for my kits
    Lay panting in the ice
    No milk to feed them

    VI.

    Savannah stretches endlessly
Trees and brush to hide in
    But it hides them too
Squat to eat, stand to fight
I have heard that noise before
    A branch breaks
    A roar
    Is it one of mine?
    Or another?
    What is this I feel?
    Not hunger
    Not thirst
    Not fear
    Grief

    VII.

Look at my mighty works and tremble
    My dominion stretches across continents
My serfs, slaves and servants countless like sand
I build to please me, to satisfy my need
My need to say "I was here"
Because my son looks at me hungrily
Touches his sword, measures himself for my crown
    Covets my treasures

    VIII.

Oh blue planet! Your beauty staggers me!
Your dying oceans still take my breath away
Your shrinking jungles verdant and hot
    I struggle with weightless instruments
    Atmospheric metrics and measures
    They accuse me, accuse us
    You have failed
    Failed to cultivate your garden
Failed as husband to the world
    Sunset around the blue curve
    Throwing shadow across my planet
    Across my heart

    IX.

    It is cold and hard
    Life is cruel
    No food for my children
Lay panting deep below the ice
    No food to feed them
The very sun has forsaken us

    X.

Cradle me in your warm bosom
    Dapple the sunlight on me
    Keep me from the endless
    Loneliness and Emptiness
Sing a violent storm of new
    Let it begin again.
